Perry is the child of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). The character Jackie Harris was played by her mom in both of the two episodes she appeared on Roseanne. The actress did not go on to explore acting as a profession after reaching adulthood, as her parents were worried about the detrimental consequences stress can cause. Perry acknowledged that she was not comfortable acting in high school, but started doing it to meet new people at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry following her graduation from Boston University, relocated to New York in search of television roles. Her small part was on TV shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, homesickness brought her back to California to find theater work. She performed on Broadway as a part of The Other Place with her mother in the year 2013. Her father Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie with her in 2015. Perry was featured nine times on The Family, an ABC film The Family, in 2016. In 2017, Perry had a minor role on ABC's political thriller Scandal in which her father was the main character. That same year her character was cast a young version of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger model of the mother's. The role was selected via auditions the fact that she had a deep relationship with the show.
